Adam Mayo - My phobias are crowds, queues and lack of leg room. All of which can be found in abundance, when travelling off the banana pancake trail in China. To make matters worse, I'm not keen on flying either and have never taken an internal flight in China. So that leaves road travel, and lots of it. Margie, my travelling partner, often brings up 'curiosity' and what it did to the cat, when accusing me of having gone one remote village too far, or when I say it's only 9 hours by bus to yet another waterfall, or when I claim that the temple we are looking for is 'just over the next hill'. But that's what China does to you; it's such a fascinating place that it's easy to forget your hang-ups and the prospect of discomfort in the never-ending quest for new, unexplored sights. It's this desire to see what's around the next corner, and China has so many, that drives me back year after year, and each time I return full of great memories of amazing experiences.

Margie Lemmens - Long suffering travelling and life partner of Adam. As a traveller I consider myself a walking contradiction: I'm afraid of flying, have no head for heights and am fairly squeamish when it comes to insects and other scary animals. As an incurable arachnophobe, my eternal quest for bright, spider-free rooms with attached bathrooms tends to clash with Adam's budget pretensions and love of atmospheric, old, wooden guesthouses. Fortunately for both of us, these minor character defects are offset by large doses of curiosity, enthusiasm and stamina, as well as fairly flexible, foldable limbs, particularly handy for long-distance travel. As a result, my motto and encouragement for future China travellers can be no other than: "If I can do it, anyone can!"

Daniel Thai - Sitting in front of the computer while browsing the internet and pretend you are travelling, —even at the speed of light to the most remote and hidden web server— is not travelling at all. Whatever you read cannot be compared with the experience your senses and feelings will bring to you. Go on, take your backpacks and step out to find yourself in a world full of smells, happiness, tastes, fears, sounds and surprises. You can also read a good book and have a beer with your friends, but it's not really the same, isn't it?
