Guizhou Province. Guizhou Province is one of our favourites: here you can find lush scenery, beautiful natural sights such as waterfalls and caves, as well as a wide variety of colourful ethnic groups, all with their own festivals, celebrations and markets ... Tibet. We flew to Lhasa from Zhongdian with China Southern Airlines for around 2,500 Yuan, including Tibet permit, valid for entering the country and travelling in the Lhasa region ... Beijing 「北京」, 1990 & 2001 to 2008: A City In Upheaval. Stepping out onto the concourse outside Beijing railway station into the sharp winter sunlight we saw the number 20 bus pulling in. "That's the one!" I shouted to Margie. We stormed it with the rest of Beijing ... Xishuangbanna. At least according to the Chinese tourist board, who have firmly situated this magical land in the North-West of Yunnan, in particular the area around Lijiang, Zhongdian and Deqin ... Hidden Gems Langzhong. This small town, with a big history, is situated on the banks of the Jialing River, some 225 kilometres from Chengdu ... Tonghai & Jianshui. These two towns to the south of Kunming make for great stopovers on the way to the stunning rice terraces of Yuanyang and its rich minority culture, or Hekou, the border crossing for Vietnam ... Xizhou. Avoid Dali, the once mythical city and haven of back-packers, now not much more than a vulgar theme park. Only 33 kilometres away is the lovely village of Xizhou, with its impressive ... Tongren. Fenghuang. It was one of those early evenings in small-town China in 2001; we'd already eaten and the after dinner entertainment options were conspicuous by their absence. The only fall-back ... YuanYang. During the first two or three months of every year, thousands of professional and would- be professional photographers descend upon this remote town in Yunnan province to take photos of one of nature's most beautiful phenomena ... Yangmei. Only 30 kilometres separate the modern, green and dynamic city of Nanning, capital of the Zhuang Autonomous Province of Guangxi, from the ancient village of Yangmei. However, the differences between the two places are so great that they might as well exist on other planets ... Dazu. When we first arrived in Dazu on a damp, cold day in January 1991, after a long but uneventful bus ride from Chongqing, we found ourselves in a small, grubby market town under a grey sky and a light drizzle. A couple of grotty, but overpriced hotels were the only evidence that Dazu might be home to something more than the abundant vegetables found in its markets... Shijiazhuang Shijiazhuang is anything but a gem and should come with a government health warning. However, what's around Shijiazhuang is indeed hidden and very much a gem... Cizhong The Road from Feilai Si near Deqin winds its way to the bottom of the Langcang Valley (Mekong River Valley) in a series of dramatic hairpin bends. On the right the mystical mountain of Meili Xueshan teases and torments the traveller with rare glimpses of its summit and glaciers in a game of hide and seek in the monsoon summer months. ... The Tropical Botanical Gardens at Menglun An unlikely gem if ever there were one, Menglun’s dusty main road is a mishmash of small restaurants, cheap hotels and motorbike shops. Pretty it isn’t! But then one doesn’t come to Menglun to see the town, but rather the fabulous Tropical Botanical Gardens that begin after crossing a suspension bridge over the Luosuo River, only a few meters from the unglamorous main road ... Wuzhen The rusty old bus from Jiaxing in Zhejiang Province rumbled along the tree shaded road, swerving past frequent potholes and dodging wayward livestock. Xiding Market We abandoned our driver, his car buried deep in the mud, and mounted a motorbike. Ironically, the previously treacherous mud bath soon became a reasonably smooth, semi-asphalted road.
